Mary Lou's Father

Si Evans was Mary Lou's father. In 1978 and 1984 I interviewed him, recording his early life, school, work, and family history. I hope that the viewer will gain some feeling for his quick wit and sense of humor despite his advanced age.

I have combined the two interviews, rearranging sections and repeating a few to provide better continuity.. ––Len

Si was born in 1891 in Venedocia, Ohio, a small farming community settled by Welsh immigrants. In those years Welsh was spoken almost exclusively. Everyone attended church. Si's family was politically active -- his father was postmaster, and an uncle tried to organize a Prohibition Party ticket, with unexpected results. While in college, Si took a year off to teach school in Venedocia, where elementary education was not what it is today!

After completing high school, Si attended Park College, Missouri. He was Junior Class Vice President, and Lulu Culbertson, whom he later married, was Secretary. Although a serious student, Si was not above participating in some outlandish pranks. After graduation he worked for theYMCA in various cities until his retirement at age 65.
