Fannie talks about herself

Council Bluffs, Iowa

[Q = Len]

Our family moved to Council Bluffs about 1925 and stayed until 1931. My father taught Hebrew at the B'nai Israel Synagogue at 618 Mynster St., still in existence.

Q. I want to change the subject and go on to Council Bluffs. How many Jewish people were there in Council Bluffs when we lived there?

A. I don't know. To me it seemed, it seemed like there were a lot of them.

Q. I know we had a good-sized religious school. You know, we studied the Torah starting in the third grade.

A. Yeah. They did have...

Q. I remember in my class in cheder it was...we must have had about 12 or so children, and that was just one class.

"Cheder" is Hebrew for "a room," and is the standard Yiddish word for a classroom where Hebrew is taught.

A. Well, I was thinking of someone while you were talking, and now I forget.
